The Ghoomar traces its roots to the Bhil tribe of Rajasthan, who performed it in devotion to Goddess Saraswati. When the Rajputs defeated and later allied with the Bhils, the dance was absorbed into Rajput royal traditions, becoming a ceremonial dance of welcome for new brides and a celebratory performance during Holi, Teej, Gangaur and other major festivals.
